Anxiety treatment can help you find effective strategies to manage your worry and get back to feeling like you

“Anxiety is a lot like a toddler. It never stops talking, tells you you’re wrong about everything, and wakes you up at 3 am.”

What are common anxiety symptoms?

We have all heard the word anxiety. Everyone feels anxious some of the time. Have you ever had a presentation at work and you can’t stop worrying about it? Or maybe you have a scheduled medical procedure and you can’t stop thinking of the worst-case scenarios. We all have these moments. Many times, our anxiety subsides. The presentation is over. The procedure was successful. But sometimes anxiety is persistent and relentless. It feels like you can’t escape the constant worry. Sometimes when you experience chronic anxiety, you start to feel physical symptoms. These can manifest as tightness in your chest, muscle soreness, nausea, headaches, fatigue and a feeling that your heart is racing. Take a look at some of the signs that you might be experiencing anxiety.

  • Feeling nervous or on edge

  • Having a sense of impending doom or constantly creating worse-case scenarios in your head

  • Increased heart rate

  • Feeling fatigued

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Having thoughts that keep you up at night

What does anxiety treatment look like?

Dealing with anxiety is physically and mentally draining. I like to call it an energy vampire. It literally can suck the life out of you. Here at Hello Therapy in Houston, TX, anxiety treatment is a process and it does not look the same for everyone. I practice a combination of evidence-based treatment approaches including:  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT)mindfulness, and exposure-based interventions. Research has shown that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is especially helpful for treating anxiety disorders. CBT is built on the idea that your thoughts directly impact how you feel about a situation and how you react to it.

Let’s look at this example. Your partner calls you to tell you they are leaving work and should be home in a bit. An hour goes by and they are still not home or answering their phone. Your immediate thought is that something terrible happened. You imagine that they got into a car accident. The negative thoughts are overwhelming, and you cannot stop them. Your thoughts cause you to feel anxious, so you call your partner on the phone repeatedly until they either answer or have made it home. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the focus is on identifying negative thoughts, evaluating them for truth, and changing them to be more adaptive. That will change how we feel and react to a situation.

Another huge part of anxiety treatment is learning how to be mindful of the physical sensations in your body that usually arise before you feel anxious. My goal is to help you learn how to recognize these anxiety signals and give you tools to manage them before they become too intense.

Will I benefit from anxiety treatment online?

Absolutely! Many clients have voiced that they enjoy online counseling as it allows them to be in their safe space. Therapy can sometimes be difficult in the beginning - I’m sure it can feel weird talking to someone you don’t know about your deepest thoughts. Online therapy allows you get the benefits from therapy while doing it at a time and place that is convenient for you. We will do sessions on a secure video platform. The only requirement is that you have reliable internet access. If online therapy isn’t your jam, I also offer walk and talk sessions.
